In the Cortes research lab, we conduct research on the teaching and learning of chemistry and biochemistry. We are particularly interested in the development of visual literacy skills and content knowledge in chemistry and biochemistry. Specifically, we

• work in collaboration with the KSU Brain Lab to use biometrics (EEG and Eyetracking) to determine how experts and novices process representations in biochemistry. 

​

• Investigate the types of representations used in biochemistry and how students and experts interact with them. ​

​

• investigate teacher content knowledge to determine areas of needed professional development.
